This is a wonderful etching. I found a lot more Rembrandt etchings here. If you are interested in purchasing an etching from an Old Master like Rembrandt, I suggest making sure you get a "lifetime impression", which means it was made during the artist's lifetime. They are far more valuable.
I remember seeing that first etching in a history book discussing how Gin became known as "Mother's Ruin." I wasn't a parent at the time and didn't appreciate the babywearing. Thanks for revisiting a great picture
Hi, i'm a baywearing enthusiast from Portugal and a friend sent me a link to your blog. I didn't know many of the images you posted here - thank you for sharing! I also collect babywearing images and often post them on my weblog - see the baby slings category.
I've loved carrying my baby and (now) toddler and have learned so much so quickly. 'Babywearing' has been a huge part of life for us as a family, as it enables us to get on with life together.
I've been so thankful for this knowledge. The exchange of information and experience in the use of worldwide baby carriers and cloths is great. I have come to realise that my own cultures' methods of baby carrying are not that well documented. So I've set up this blog to collect anecdotes, pictures and tutorials in Celtic and European traditional baby carrying.
Please email any information you have to me and we can build up a collection, in one place, of European baby carrying heritage.
Painting by Adriaen van de Velde (1636-1672) ("Stop at an Inn", Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig).

Behind the name
I decided on the name Celtic Baby Carrying as I thought that it included a wide spectrum of areas which are now contained in what we named Europe. More on the history of Celts and their vast existence across Europe on Wikipedia. I may include many other countries in this blog which may not officially be European...simply due to the natural migration of people over many centuries. Obviously major events such as war, religion, industral revolutions, and disease have all had a factor in spreading and absorbing cultures across the world. In any case it is wonderful to gather information and exchange our cultural heritage!
I am a work at home mum. My son is two and a half years old. I'm an artist, illustrator, floral designer and a 'for fun' writer. I enjoy growing my own veggies, crafting, camping in my VW campervan, reading and walking. I've been married for eight years to 'The One'.
